Abstract
ABSTRACT Urban agriculture has emerged as a vital strategy for enhancing food security and alleviating poverty. This study investigates the practice of urban agriculture in Sokoto Metropolis with a focus on the type, benefits and challenges associated with urban agriculture. Data for the study was obtained from a semi-structured questionnaire administered to 150 respondents. The findings revealed that urban agriculture in Sokoto metropolis is characterized by a high level of informality, inadequate land, limited access to credit and markets and inadequate support from government. Despite these challenges, urban agriculture makes significant contributions to the local food systems providing fresh food, income and employment to about 73% of the population. The study recommends the development of supportive policies, improved access to finance and markets and enhance capacity building for urban farmers to optimize the benefits of urban agriculture in Sokoto Metropolis.
