Abstract
Coleus amboinicus leaves were analyzed for chemical phyto-constituents and to assess the possible medicinal potential of the plant. The volatile chemical constituents were extracted by hydro-distillation using Dean-Stark apparatus while the non-volatile phytochemicals of the dried leaf sample were extracted with ethanol. The two groups of chemical constituents (hydrodistillate and crude ethanolic extract) were then analyzed. The hydrodistillate was analyzed by GC-MS only. While the crude ethanolic extract was screened qualitatively for the phytochemicals present, GC-MS analysis and analyzed for antioxidant and TPC capacities. The results showed the plant to be rich (both hydrodistillate and the crude ethanolic extract) in large number of chemical constituents. The crude extract in addition showed very good antioxidant capacity with noticeable TPC contents. These chemical constituents definitely attest to the medicinal value and usage of the plant.
