Abstract
This study investigates the impact of social networking on the academic performance of students in Edo State University, Iyamho. The rapid growth of social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) has transformed how students communicate, learn, and interact. The research sought to determine whether the use of social networks enhances or hinders students’ academic performance. A descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 150 undergraduate students selected across various faculties using a simple random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, and correlation analysis. Findings revealed that while social networks serve as useful tools for academic collaboration, information sharing, and communication between students and lecturers, excessive and non-academic use significantly affects students’ concentration, study time, and overall academic performance. The study concludes that the influence of social networks on academic performance can be both positive and negative, depending on usage patterns. It is therefore recommended that students should manage their time effectively and use social networking platforms for academic and research purposes. The university management should also organize regular digital literacy and time-management workshops to guide students on the productive use of social media for learning.
