Impact of Social Media on Senior Secondary School Students’ Academic Performance in Literature in English in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State

Abstract

The study investigated the impact of social media on senior secondary school students’ academic performance in Literature in English in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and answered. The research design adopted for this study is the descriptive survey research design. The population for this study was made up of all the 4,022 students in the 20 public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area in Benin City, Edo State. The sample size for the study was made up of 100 students. The researcher made use of descriptive statistics such as mean score and standard deviation as the method of data analysis. The findings from the study include that here is high level of students’ academic performance in Literature in English in senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. It was concluded that there is a positive impact of social media on senior secondary school students’ academic performance in Literature in English in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. It was therefore recommended among others that the Ministry of Education should implement comprehensive digital literacy programmes to teach students how to use social media responsibly and effectively for educational purposes.
