Abstract
Abstract The subject-matter of this research work "Democracy and Development in Ndoki Land, 1999-2023" examines the land and people of Ndoki, their precolonial activities and how democracy has influenced economic and socio-political development since 1999. Conducting this research was not quite easy, as most of the materials needed for the work were scarce and difficult to come by as a result of hoarding, some of the materials were mostly unpublished. Nevertheless, oral interviews and archives were instrumental in the writing of this work. The phenomenon of development in Ndoki Land has been a matter of deep deliberation by indigenes who feel they have been robbed off their right to good standard of living and social amenities by the government. Despite the huge human, material and natural resources possessed by Ndoki region, development is still far-fetched. However, from the findings, this research has been able to discover that the low level of social development in the region is due to the fact that it has produced selfish and corrupt political actors both in the state and federal level. For instance, since 1999 when Nigeria returned to democratic government, no Ndoki indigene has emerged either as governor or president. This research work has various impacts, one of which is highlighting the impact of democracy on leadership and sociocultural aspect of the people.
