Abstract

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the level of awareness of ocular complications of hypertension and eye checkup practices among hypertensive patients in Obio- Akpor Local Government Area. A total of 298 hypertensive patients participated in the study. Demographic information, including gender, age, duration of hypertension, and educational attainment, was collected. Participants' awareness of ocular complications of hypertension was assessed through a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests to determine associations between socio-demographic characteristics and awareness. The study participants consisted of 158 (53.02%) males and 140 (46.98%) females, with an average age of 54.47±14.07 years. Majority fell within the age group of 50-69 years (46.31%), and most had hypertension for 1-10 years (43.62%). Educational attainment varied, with 39.58% having secondary education and 11.11% reporting no formal education. The level of awareness of ocular complications of hypertension was found to be 63.09%.
