Abstract
Introduction: Maternal mortality remains a leading cause of death among women of reproductive age. Access to quality antenatal care and utilization are essential for the prevention of maternal morbidity, mortality and ensuring successful pregnancy outcomes and this can be achieved through health insurance. This study aimed to compare the perceived quality of services among pregnant women with and without health insurance attending the antenatal clinic at UDUTH, Sokoto, Nigeria. Methodology: The study was a comparative cross-sectional study. The data was collected using questionnaire survey (uploaded in ODK server). Chi-square test was used to find association between NHIS and NON-NHIS clients with socio-economic variables. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Result: The results reveal that while about two third of non-NHIS clients got their investigations done easily, only one third of NHIS clients had it done with ease. Similarly, only 5% of non- NHIS insured clients spent more than 30 minutes in their registration whereas up to 62.8% of the NHIS clients spent this same time (p>0.01). The ease of getting investigations done was found to be statistically significant, (p0.001). Conclusion: The satisfaction of women attending the ANC clinic at UDUTH is good, yet the lengthy hours spent especially by the NHIS clients in registration and in waiting to get their drugs after prescription should be addressed. This study recommends providing a side laboratory for NHIS clients within the O&G department to reduce the difficulty of getting investigations done.
