Abstract
Abstract The rapid growth of big data has revolutionized the way organizations manage and utilize information, yet Nigerian organizations lag behind in effectively implementing these technologies. This research seeks to explore the impact of the evolution of database management systems (DBMS) on their effectiveness in managing big data, as well as the challenges that hinder the adoption and utilization of big data technologies in Nigeria. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study collected data through questionnaires distributed to IT professionals, as well as qualitative interviews to capture expert insights. Quantitative data were analyzed using statistical techniques such as ANOVA and Chi-square tests, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic coding to identify common challenges and benefits related to big data adoption. The study found that the evolution of DBMS significantly enhances their effectiveness in managing big data, with newer systems proving to be more capable. Additionally, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and a lack of skilled professionals were identified as significant barriers to the adoption and effective use of big data technologies. These challenges notably affect organizations' ability to implement and utilize big data systems to their full potential. The findings suggest that Nigerian organizations must address key infrastructural and skill-based challenges to fully leverage the benefits of big data technologies. This has implications for policymakers and organizations looking to improve their data management strategies in the era of big data.
