Abstract

Transportation plays a vital role in urban development and economic growth. This study examines the travel patterns and modal choices of commuters in Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria. The research identifies how gender, socio-economic factors, and trip purposes influence commuters’ travel behavior. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to commuters in selected motor parks—Ojota, Oshodi, and Ikeja Bus Terminal. Findings revealed that employment status, income, and trip purpose significantly influence mode choice and frequency of travel. The study also shows that females make slightly more trips than males, often covering shorter distances. Regression analysis indicated that employment status and trip purposes such as business and market trips are strong predictors of travel frequency. The research concludes by recommending improved transport planning and gender-responsive mobility policies to enhance accessibility and commuting efficiency in Ikeja and Lagos State at large.
