Abstract
ABSTRACT Ukana, located in the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, exemplifies the dynamic socio-cultural and economic transformation in southeastern Nigeria. Despite its significance, there is limited scholarly work documenting Ukana's traditional governance, economic activities, and cultural evolution. This study addresses this gap by exploring the history of Ukana from 1960 to 2020, focusing on how colonial rule, post-independence reforms, and modernization influenced the community. Employing a qualitative historical approach, including oral interviews, archival materials, and secondary sources, the research examines changes in Ukana’s political structures, economic practices, and cultural resilience. The study reveals that traditional governance systems, such as chieftaincy and age-grade councils, were significantly impacted by external influences, while economic activities shifted from subsistence farming to cash crop production and trade. Findings highlight that Ukana’s traditional practices, though resilient, adapted to the evolving socio-economic landscape. This study provides insights into the adaptability of rural communities in Nigeria and contributes to a deeper understanding of Ukana’s role in the broader historical narrative of southeastern Nigeria, serving as a valuable resource for historians, policymakers, and the community.
