Abstract
This finding was carried out to investigate the effects of aqueous extract of Uvaria chamae roots on the function indices of the ovary of the female wistar rats. 28 adult female rats with average weight of 123.0 ± 33.5g were randomly grouped into four groups (A-D) with seven (7) rats each. Animals in group A were the control and they were administered 0.5ml of water each throughout the experiment, while the animals in group B-D were administered the aqueous extract of uvaria chamae in 100,200,400mg/kg bodyweight of the extract for 28 days. Estradiol, Progesterone, FSH, LH, and Prolactin, Glycogen levels, and Histological study were conducted. Results showed a dose-dependent decrease in ovarian glycogen and estradiol levels while serum estradiol increased at higher doses. LH and FSH levels exhibited variable responses and prolactin levels were elevated at higher doses. Histological examination revealed cellular degeneration and follicular disruption in treated groups, especially at 400 mg/kg. These findings suggest that Uvaria chamae root extract alters ovarian function and structure in a dose-dependent manner, which may impact reproductive health.
