The Role of Government in Poverty Alleviation in Nigeria: a Study of Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State

Abstract
This study investigated the role of government in poverty alleviation in Owan East LGA, Edo State, Nigeria. The broad objective of the study is to examine how governance influence poverty alleviation in Nigeria and also to ascertain if federal government poverty alleviation programs enhances poverty reduction in Nigeria. Primary source of data collection was used with the simple percentage and chi-square statistical tool used to analyze the data and test hypotheses respectively. A sample size of 100 was selected using the random sampling techniques. The findings revealed that federal government poverty alleviation programs have significant effect on poverty reduction in Nigeria and that discontinuity of poverty alleviation programs has significant effect on poverty reduction in Nigeria. The study recommended among others that government should try and ensure transparency in her policies and programme in order to ensure accountability. This will help greatly in reducing the rate of corruption in the country and that for poverty to be properly eradicated, there is need for all tiers of government to devote a greater part of their resources to agricultural production.
