Abstract
This study investigated the use of powdered eggshells as a substitute for calcium carbonate in paint production. The results of the paint production using powdered eggshells showed a density of 1.0 g/ml, a drying time of 30 minutes for the first coat and 45 minutes for the second coat, and opacity reaching 95% coverage after the second coat. The resistance to external exposure varied across different surfaces, with wood showing no fading but slight peeling, metal exhibiting colour fading and minor rusting, and plastic maintaining full adhesion without discolouration. The pH value of the paint was recorded at 8.5. Brush-ability tests demonstrated smooth application with good coverage and a finish quality free of visible brush marks. These results suggest that powdered eggshells have the potential to be an effective substitute for calcium carbonate in paint production, offering comparable performance in terms of density, drying time, opacity, resistance to external exposure, pH value, and brush-ability. Further research is recommended to explore the feasibility of utilizing eggshells on a larger scale in the paint industry.
