Abstract
ABSTRACTIncreased agricultural production generates a bulk quantity of agricultural wastes after crop harvesting in the fields. A significant quantity of these wastes remains underutilized in the form of rice straw, pineapple leaves, and corn cobs in the harvesting fields. The majority of agricultural wastes are composed of lignocellulosic materials, specifically cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The production of lignocellulosic materials such as cellulose into value-added products has attracted considerable attention among academics and industry players. The properties of cellulose isolated from white corn cobs were characterized by FTIR and BET analysis in this research work. The pulping was carried out according to the methods described by Jonoobi et al., (2009) as modified by Abe et al., (2018). It was observed that the absorbable band of O-H, C=O and C-H group stretch vibrations were at 3675, 1640 and 2881 cm-1 respectively. The surface area of the cellulose was also evaluated to be 352.490 m2/g which indicates large active sites for reactions. The future of cellulose isolation from agricultural waste is bright, offering a pathway towards more sustainable and eco-friendly material production.
