Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of culture on language usage in Eke, a community in Udi, Enugu State. Specifically, it investigates how the yearly Igwanshi festival impacts language usage Igwanshi is a cultural celebration that promotes a sense of solidarity and camaraderie among both local residents and people of the diaspora. This is achieved through various communal activities, including dining; dancing, and engaging in conversations. Nevertheless, the event has also served as a platform for the occurrence of code-mixing, where individuals blend two or more languages in their speech as a result of being exposed to varied linguistic surroundings. This approach has led to the slow decline of the native languages spoken by the ancestors of Eke. A qualitative study was employed, and a total of 10 interviews were conducted to examine the factors that contribute to the decline of indigenous languages. The study aims to find solutions to reduce the impact of code-mixing on linguistic preservation in the community by using the Nativist Theory, which focuses on the natural ability to acquire language. The findings seek to offer insights into achieving a balance between cultural assimilation and the conservation of linguistic heritage.
