Abstract
In this research, biogas was produced from wastewater in the recycle system of the Sokoto Modern Abattoir. Two different experiments consisting of two (2) digesters for each sample i.e sample A and sample B, were set up for production of biogas. A 500 ml sample of wastewater A and B was added to each labeled digesters. The initial pH levels for Sample A and Sample B were 8.01 and 8.09 while the final pH were 7.33 and 7.30, respectively. For Sample A, the highest biogas production occurred in the second week (57.14 cm³), and the lowest in the fourth week (8.57 cm³). Similarly, Sample B produced the most biogas in week two (68.57 cm³) and the least in week four (10.00 cm³). In total, Sample B generated 128.57 cm³ of biogas, while Sample A produced (97.14 cm³) after a four-week retention period. After a retention period of four weeks, microbiological analysis was conducted which involves culturing on nutrient agar, subculturing on nutrient agar in order to obtain pure isolates, gram staining and microscopy. The Bacterial species isolated and identified in the digesters containing Sample A were Proteus mirabilis which is gram negative, rod shaped, motile and lack spores and Bacillus laterosporus which is gram positive, rod shaped, have spores and motile while those in Sample B were Serratia marcescens which is gram negative, rod shaped, motile and lack spores and Bacillus subtilis which is gram positive, rod shaped, have spores and motile. The results suggest that biogas can be produced from Abattoir wastewater which may offer a promising sustainable energy solution.
