Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates gender discrimination and its impact on female staff career progression at Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, and the objectives is to identify the nature of gender discrimination in the university, to identify the factors responsible for gender discrimination in Federal University Dutsin-ma, to assess the impact of gender discrimination on female career progression, to profer solution to the menace of gender discrimination in Federal University Dutsinma Katsina state, Nigeria. Despite increasing awareness of gender equality in higher education, female academics and non-academic staff continue to face significant barriers to career advancement. Using Social Role Theory and Glass Ceiling Theory as theoretical frameworks, the research examines the nature of gender discrimination, factors responsible for its persistence, impacts on career progression, and potential solutions. Data collected through mixed research methods reveals that cultural norms, limited leadership opportunities, and inadequate implementation of gender-sensitive policies contribute significantly to discrimination. The findings indicate that female staff experience delayed promotions and exclusion from decision-making positions, though access to research funding appears less problematic than in other Nigerian universities. The study recommends increasing female representation in leadership, implementing transparent promotion criteria, establishing mentorship networks, and conducting gender awareness training. This research contributes to understanding gender dynamics in Nigerian academia and provides practical interventions to promote gender equity in higher education institutions.
