Abstract
Abstract This study influenced the effects of organic manure type and application timing on the growth and yield of Amaranthus cruentus L L. in the Sudan Savanna of Nigeria. A complete randomized design (CRD) was employed, with four application times (two, four, and six weeks before planting, and at planting) and three manure types (control, poultry manure at 3 t/ha, and goat dung at 6 t/ha). Growth parameters, including plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, number of branches, and total yield, were measured at 2, 4, and 6 weeks after sowing (WAS). Results indicated that manure rate significantly influenced all growth parameters (p < 0.05), with goat dung at 6 t/ha producing the tallest plants (65.58 cm), largest leaf area (75.91 cm²), highest number of leaves (20.50), and greatest yield (6.02 t/ha). In contrast, the timing of manure application had no significant effect on plant performance. These findings suggest that Amaranthus cruentus L responds more strongly to manure quantity than application timing. The study concludes that small-scale farmers in the Sudan Savanna can optimize amaranth productivity by applying goat dung at 6 t/ha, regardless of timing, offering a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for improving leafy vegetable production in nutrient-deficient soils.
