Abstract
The study examined the THE LEGAL IMPLICATIONS OF SPORTS AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION PRACTICAL COURSES AMONG COACHES OF SPORTS AND HUMAN KINETICS LECTURERS IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN. The purposive sampling technique was used to select a total of 199 respondents, (17) respondents from the department of human kinetics and sport science in University of Benin, (15) respondents from University of Benin Sport Center and (167) respondents from Edo State Sport Commission who participated by filling the self structured and validated questionnaire titled "The Legal Implications of Sports and Physical Education Practical Courses among Coaches of Sports and Human Kinetics Lecturers in University of Benin" This technique is used based on the criteria that, among other population in this center, these set of people are in charge of the related issues ( practical courses that affects students and athletes alike). Mean and standard deviation were used to analysed two research questions raised. The Inferential statistics of Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to test the formulated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that the lecturers have a higher level of understanding of liability for injuries or harm caused to students during sports and practical sessions than the coaches amd it was also revealed that there was a positive weak relationship between coaches and Human Kinetics lecturers perception of the legal implications of sports and physical education practical courses and the relationship was not significant. The study concluded that coaches and Human Kinetics lecturers understand the concept of legal liability in sports with its attendant implications/consequences. Consequently, they cultivated/developed a positive perception of legal implications in sports and PE practical courses. It was recommended that Periodic training should be engaged in by coaches on legal liability in sports to update their knowledge on the issue/concept and adequate safety measures, equipment, standard facilities should be provided; and supervision of sports and practical sessions should be ensured by HKS lecturers, coaches and both the UNIBEN and ESSC authorities to avoid legal liability.
