Effect of Leadership Style and Worker’s Productivity (a Study of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano State)

Abstract
ABSTRACT Leadership style is a social influence process in which the leader seeks the compulsory or voluntary participation of subordinates in an effort to reach organizational goals. Therefore, the basic purpose of a good leader is to improve performance and productivity by imparting knowledge, changing attitudes or increasing skills of his subordinate. Consequently, this study is aimed at examining Leadership style and their impact on employee productivity in Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano State, Nigeria. Survey research design was used, based on three predictors: Autocratic Leadership Style, democratic leadership style and laissez-fair leadership style were identified and tested towards employee productivity as the dependent variable. A Sample size of 113 respondents were captured from the staff of Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano State, Nigeria out of the population of 162 through Krejcie and Morgan table of sample size determination. Therefore, For the purpose of the research work probability sampling techniques was chosen which involve simple random sampling technique, and data was obtained through a structured close-ended questionnaire. Reliability test was used. Descriptive statistics that report the respondents profile was captured and inferential statistic that involve multiple regression analysis was used to test hypotheses of the study, using SPSS version 21. The results revealed that autocratic leadership style and laissez-fair leadership style has significant relationship on employee productivity, while democratic leadership style has insignificant relationship on employee productivity in Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano State, Nigeria. On the bases of these findings, it recommends that managers should: strive to become role models to their subordinates; inspire subordinates by providing meaning and challenge to work; stimulate subordinate efforts to become innovative & creative; and pay attention to each individual’s need for achievement and growth.
