Abstract
Despite their importance in ecosystem functioning, the biodiversity of ant species in urban ecosystems is often overlooked. In Nigeria, there is a inadequate documented information on the diversity and ecology of ants in educational institutions. This knowledge gap is particularly evident in the Federal College of Education, Katsina (FCEKT), where no comprehensive studies have been reported. This study aimed at investigating the biodiversity of ant species in the FCEKT. A total of 537 individual ants, representing a single species (Monomorium ergatogyna), were collected from five plots across the campus using baited traps and handcollecting methods. The results showed variations in ant abundance and distribution patterns, with Plot E (Voc&Tech) and Plot C (Education) having the highest relative abundances of 26.26% and 26.07%, respectively. Plot A (Agric) had the lowest relative abundance of 12.48%. The characteristics of the ant nests also exhibited similarities and differences, with variations in size, shape, and surface texture. The findings of this study contribute to understanding of ant ecology and biodiversity FCEKT and emphasize the importance of conservation efforts to protect ant populations and their habitats.
