Abstract
Doxorubicin, a widely used chemotherapeutic agent, can cause cardiotoxicity, leading to heart failure. Momordica charantia (MC) is a plant with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may offer cardioprotection, The objective of this study is to investigate the cardioprotective effect of MC on doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats, focusing on intracellular adhesion molecule 1 and Interferon gamma (ICAM-1 and IFN-γ) .Rats were divided into four groups: control, doxorubicin,100mg/kg MC + Doxorubicin and 200mg/kg MC + doxorubicin. Cardiac damage was assessed, the hearts were excised, expression of ICAM-1 and IFN-γ was observed by gene expression study. There’s high expression of ICAM-1 and IFN-Γ genes in the groups treated with doxorubicin, and there is a decrease expression of the genes in groups treated with Doxorubicin in combination with Momordica charantia extract. Doxorubicin-induced cardiac damage was significantly reduced in MC- treated rats, accompanied by decreased ICAM-1 and IFN-γ expression . MC exhibits cardioprotective effects against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, by which modulating ICAM-1 and IFN-γ ,due to it’s antioxidant and anti- inflammatory properties. This study suggests MC as a potential adjunctive therapy to mitigate doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity.
