Abstract
Abstract This study investigates the use of smartphones for accessing news among students of Bayero University, Kano. Employing a survey research design, data were collected from 200 respondents across the Faculties of Communication, Law, and Computing. Findings reveal that nearly all students own smartphones and frequently use them to access news, primarily through internet browsing and social media platforms. The results highlight the convenience, immediacy, and accessibility of smartphone-based news consumption, while also identifying challenges such as data costs, battery limitations, and distractions. The study concludes that smartphones play a significant role in students’ news consumption habits and recommends the integration of media literacy programs into university curricula to promote critical evaluation and responsible use of digital news sources.
