Assessment of Solid Waste Evacuation in Aba Urban, Abia State

Abstract
Solid waste evacuation has become increasingly crucial amid the growing urbanization in Aba. This study addresses the challenges and effectiveness of current waste evacuation methods in Aba, focusing on the impact on environmental sustainability and public health. The aim of the study is to assess solid waste evacuation in Aba, Abia state, while the objectives are to identify the sources and types of solid waste in the study area, assess the existing solid waste evacuation methods in Aba, examine the level of evacuation of solid waste in the study area, identify the challenges and constraints in solid waste evacuation, and suggest ways of addressing the challenges of solid waste evacuation and management in the study area. The study employed a survey research design, the study utilizes various methods, including questionnaires, direct measurement, observations, and interviews, in order to gather comprehensive data. The analysis employed inferential and descriptive statistics to reveal the existing practices in solid waste evacuation. Mini tab was used in testing the hypothesis, the result of the finding reveals that “there is no significant difference in the number of solid waste collection point among neighbourhoods of Aba, Abia State”. Also, the findings highlight several challenges of waste evacuation, including insufficient waste collection points, and irregular evacuation schedules. These challenges contribute to environmental pollution, health hazards, and inefficiencies in waste management. The study underscores the need for urgent attention and strategic interventions to enhance the solid waste evacuation system in Aba. Recommendations include the establishment of additional waste collection points, implementation of regular and planned evacuation schedules, and the adoption of innovative technologies for efficient waste management, thereby contributing to a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
