Abstract
This study investigates the geology and paleo-depositional conditions of Umueme Community in Ishiagu area, Ivo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The research aims to understand the lithological composition, structural features, and depositional environment of the area within the context of the Lower Benue Trough. Field mapping, petrographic studies, and sedimentological analyses were conducted to identify rock types, mineral compositions, and stratigraphic relationships. The study area is predominantly composed of shale, sandstone, limestone, and minor siltstone, which reflect sedimentation under marine to marginal marine conditions during the Albian to Turonian ages. Structural analysis revealed the presence of fractures and minor faults that indicate post-depositional tectonic activities related to the Santonian orogeny. Paleo-depositional interpretation suggests a transition from shallow marine to deltaic environments, influenced by fluctuating sea levels and sediment supply. The results provide insights into the geological evolution of the Ishiagu region and contribute to understanding the broader depositional framework of the Lower Benue Trough.
