Abstract
e study examined retained earnings and performance of consumer product manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The study adopted the cross sectional design. The population of the study comprises of all 80 consumer goods manufacturing companies in Nigeria quoted on the Nigerian exchange group as at 31st December 2023.The study adopted the secondary method of data collection. Data were collected from annual report and financial statement of the selected firms from 2016 to 2023. The datawere analyzed using STATA Computer Software. The study used multiple regression analysis to investigate the impact of independent variables on dependent variable. The findings from the study revealed that; Retained earnings significantly affectreturn on asset ofconsumer product manufacturing firms in Nigeria; Retained earnings has no significant impactonreturnonequityof consumerproduct manufacturingfirms inNigeria; Retained earnings significantly affect return on capital employed of consumer product manufacturing firms in Nigeria. In line with the findings, the study recommends that; Consumer product manufacturing companies in Nigeria should focus on optimizing asset utilization to maximize return on assets (ROA); Also, consumer product manufacturing companies in Nigeria should ensure effective management of equity through transparent reporting and strategic dividend policies; Lastly, corporate firms should prioritizeprojects and investments that yield the highest returns relative to the cost of capital. This strategic allocation can enhance overall profitability and operational performance, aligning financial decisions with long-term value creation objectives.
