Corruption and Performance of Public Corporation in Nigeria (a Case Study of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (bedc)

Abstract
This study examines corruption and performance of public corporation in Nigeria. The objective of the study is to ascertain whether government policy on electricity in Nigeria encourages corruption in the electricity sector. The study adopted the qualitative method of data collection whereby relevant data were collected from both primary and secondary source. The data collected were analyzed by use of simple percentages while chi-square (X) was used to test the hypothesis formulated for valid in: The questionnaire was the main instrument used in collecting data from the respondents while the secondary did collect for this study was from journals. existing literature and internet source. Findings of the study show that government regulation and policy on provision of electricity in Nigeria encourages corruption in the electricity sector in Nigeria. The study concluded that corruption hurts economic performance by reducing private investment, by adversely affecting the quantity and quality of public infrastructure, deepen poverty by reducing human capital accumulation. The study recommended that government should institute regulated market to supply low-income people with electricity while people and industry that consume a certain amount of electricity should be made to buy through unregulated market where market principles will determine price of electricity. This will encourage the private investors enormously to invest in the sector since they will have strong hope of not only recovering their cost of investment but will also make profit.
