Abstract
This research focused on the design and fabrication of a fully mechanized system aimed at increasing processing efficiency, reducing labor intensity, and improving operational safety in palm kernel processing. The machine was designed with key considerations for performance, durability, ease of maintenance, and cost-effectiveness. The mechanized assembly comprises components fabricated from mild steel and high-carbon steel, powered by an electric motor rated at 3.5hp acting as the prime mover. The integrated power transmission system utilizes belts and pulleys to effectively transfer motion to the cracking and separating units. Sieves and rotary action facilitate the post-cracking separation process. This machine effectively mechanizes the separation of palm kernels from cracked shells, eliminating the manual labor traditionally associated with this operation. It demonstrates a cracking efficiency of 70% – 83.7%, a throughput of 19200nuts/h to 22886nuts/h. The mechanized system significantly reduced processing time and manual labor requirements compared to conventional methods. The total cost of constructing the machine was ₦395,000, making it an economically viable solution for small- to medium-scale palm kernel processor. The results affirm that the mechanized cracker and separator machine enhances productivity and safety in palm kernel processing, supporting sustainable agricultural practices and promoting economic growth in palm oil-producing regions.
