Internal Audit and Public Sector Management (a Case Study of Ministry of Finance, Imo State)

This study is devoted as assessing internal audit and public sector management (a case study of ministry of finance Imo State) the methodology employed includes personal interview written questionnaires were made in a bid to improve public sector management via internal audit. The economy today is known to be characterized by incessant frauds, forgeries, management of public properties and frauds. This through a global phenomenon has recorded an astounding growth in the Nigeria public sector management. It cuts across all sectors of the economy, Imo State in particular. It is threat that calls for prompt appraisal of the internal control system in the sectors. Internal audit as an integral part of the internal control system is however weighted down by a lot of factors. The inability to reconcile the accounting system regularly is more or less a haven for fraudulent and co scrupulous staff. A problem which is the consequences of competent manpower shortage the rapid growth of electronic data processing system is also posing a great impact in the public sector management since the air in almost all units of the public sector. This is a restriction in meeting modern day challenges in auditing public sector organization. The trend of irregularities, management has got an extent that if sufficient efforts are not made, the economic future will become a menace rather than fortune to the populace. The point therefore is that the internal audit department should be hastily equipped with competent and qualified staff and modern facilities so as to make it effective so that internal audit can still play its role improving the public sector management.
