Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the chemical and biological properties of Musa sapientum, focusing on its UV photoprotective and biological activities. Methanolic extracts of plant were analyzed using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and ultraviolet UV spectrophotometry. The UV analysis revealed significant absorption characteristics, with potential phenolic group activity indicated by sodium acetate and boric acid tests. The interests of medicinal plants as therapeutic agents against diseases such as Alzheimer, skin disorders and Diabetes mellitus is growing. In order to investigate the influence of Musa sapientum, it was screened for anti-tyrosinase, anti-amylase and anti-glucosidase activities. Tyrosinase are responsible for melanin formation in all life domains. Musa sapientum was detected to inhibit tyrosinase at a percentage of 67.103% compared to Kojic Acid 99.392%. This shows that the effectiveness of Musa sapientum against tyrosinase is low but above average compared to Kojic Acid. In the glucosidase assay, the positive control acarbose showed IC50 of 91.121ml and the plant extracts exhibit 47.617ml glucosidase inhibitory activity. The plant extracts showed statistically significant low IC50 (in the range of 11.942ml) as compared to acarbose (88.347ml) for amylase inhibition. The study authenticate the therapeutic potency of Musa sapientum leaf extract in treatment of skin disease and Diabetes mellitus and also delineate a good basis for the selection of the leaf extract for further investigations.
