Abstract
This study investigated the effects of two commercial feeds (Ultima and Chikun) on the growth performance and fat content of broiler chickens in Zaria, Nigeria. Twenty-four chicks were randomly assigned to four groups fed either Ultima or Chikun starter and finisher feeds for six weeks. Growth rate and weight gain were monitored weekly, and fat levels were assessed through physical examination at the end of the experiment. Results showed that Ultima feed (U1) supported consistent growth rate, while Chikun feed (C2) resulted in better overall weight gain. However, excessive fat deposition was observed in Ultima-fed groups (U1 and U2) compared to Chikun-fed groups (C1 and C2). In conclusion, Ultima feed appears to promote growth but may lead to fattier meat. Chikun feed, particularly the starter and finisher combination (C2), offers a balance between weight gain and leaner meat quality.
