Abstract
This project focuses on the design and implementation of a 400W Solar Power Direct Current (DC) system intended to power common DC loads, such as LED lights, fans, and mobile chargers. The primary goal is to develop an affordable, scalable, and efficient energy solution that can address the energy challenges faced by households and small businesses, particularly in rural and off-grid areas. The system leverages solar energy as the main power source, utilizing locally available components to ensure cost-effectiveness and sustainability. The study involved the design of key components, including solar panels, a charge controller, a battery storage system, and DC Load. Detailed performance tests were conducted to evaluate the system's load performance, efficiency, and reliability. The results demonstrated that the system is capable of providing a stable and efficient power supply under varying load conditions, with an overall efficiency of up to 60% using a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) Solar Charge Controller. The system’s reliability was further proven under different environmental conditions, including fluctuating sunlight levels and temperature variations. This project highlights the potential of renewable energy solutions in addressing Nigeria’s energy crisis by reducing dependence on expensive and polluting fossil fuels. Focusing on small-scale, DC-based applications, the study aims to empower underserved electric energy communities and promote sustainable energy practices. Additionally, the project offers insights into system optimization and the practical challenges of designing such energy solutions in resource-constrained environments.
