Students’ Competences and Entrepreneurship Development in the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Calabar, Calabar – Nigeria

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to examine students’ competences and entrepreneurship development in the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Calabar. To achieve this objective, four null hypotheses were generated to direct the study. Literature review was done according to the variables under study. Survey research design was used for the study. A sample of two hundred and twenty-one (221) students was selected for the study. Theselected was done using Taro-Yamane formula for sample size determination. Data collection was carried out through accidental sampling technique. The questionnaire was the research instrument used for data collection. The instrument was subjected to face and content validation by the project supervisor. The reliability of the instrument was established through Cronbach Alpha reliability method. Pearson Moment Correlation Analysis (r) was the statistical analysis techniques adopted to test the hypotheses under study to ascertain whether to reject or retain them. All hypotheses were subjected to testing at .05 level of significance with relative degrees of freedom. The results of the analysis revealed that LIS students’ competences of information brokerage, book publishing record management and indexing/abstracting was significantly related to entrepreneurship development in University of Calabar. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended among others that library school administrators should provide suitable gadgets to make teaching and learning of web-based publishing achievable since it will boast library and information science students’ competences and confidence to strive entrepreneurially.
