Abstract
This study examined the profitability of irrigated maize production in Kumbotso LGA, Kano State, Nigeria. Key objectives included analyzing farmers’ socio-economic characteristics, costs and returns, yield determinants, and production constraints. Data were gathered through 75 questionnaires across five wards and analyzed using descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and farm budgeting techniques. Findings revealed that most respondents were young, male, and had secondary or Qur’anic education, with limited access to extension services. The regression analysis showed marital status and secondary occupation significantly influenced maize yield. Farm budgeting indicated a net income of ₦92,902 per hectare and a return of 0.61 per naira invested. High costs of irrigation equipment, fuel, labour, and fertilizer were major constraints. The study concluded that irrigated maize production is profitable and recommended subsidies, mechanization, credit access, and cooperative formation to enhance productivity.
