Abstract

In this project work phytochemical analysis & antibacterial activities of leaf extract of icheku (Dialium guineese) on some selected gastro intestinal tract organisms (E.coli, shigella spp &Salmonella typhi) was carried out to determined the phytochemical present and antibacterial activities of the leaf extract. The samples were collected (i.e the fresh leaves) from the forest at ugwu Onyeomain Enugu state and dried under room temperature for 2 weeks. The leaves were pulverized to very fine particles using electric blender.100g of powdered leaves was measured and soaked with 500ml of ethanol to evaporate before the antibacterial activities, The phytochemical analysis of Dialium guineense leaf extract revealed the presence of Saponin, flavonoids, alkaloids and tannin. The zone of inhibition of the extract from E.coli were 6 to 15mm,Salmonella3 to 13mm and shigella spp. 1 to 10mm. for ethanol extract. Whereas water extracts ranges from 5 to 12mm for E.coli, 2to17mm for salmonella typhi and 4 to 11mm for shigella prospectively.
