Abstract

This research examines Elisions and Additions (Al-Zihafāt wal-‘Illal) in the poetry collection “Nabd al-Huruf” by Muhammad al-Awwal Ibrahim, focusing on selected poetic models. The study aims to identify and analyze the metrical deviations and modifications used by the poet in accordance with the principles of Arabic prosody (‘Ilm al-‘Arudh). It explores how these metrical variations contribute to the musicality, rhythm, and aesthetic quality of the poems. The research employs both descriptive and analytical methods to examine examples from the collection, highlighting the artistic purpose and linguistic impact of each elision and addition. Findings reveal that Muhammad al-Awwal Ibrahim skillfully utilizes these prosodic devices not only to maintain rhythmical harmony but also to enhance the expressive power of his poetic language. The study concludes that understanding the poet’s use of zihafat and ‘illal is essential for appreciating the technical and artistic depth of contemporary Arabic poetry.
