Abstract
ABSTRACT Soil bearing capacity is very important in geotechnical engineering, determining the maximum load that a soil can withstand without experiencing excessive settlement or failure. Accurate estimation of soil bearing capacity is essential for safe and efficient foundation design, as it directly affects the structural integrity and stability of buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. Inadequate bearing capacity can lead to catastrophic consequences, including foundation failure, structural damage, and even loss of life. This study presents a comprehensive review of the existing methods for evaluating soil bearing capacity, including the Terzaghi, Meyerhof, and Brinch Hansen approaches. The advantages and limitations of each method are discussed, and the factors influencing soil bearing capacity, such as soil type, density, moisture content, and depth, are examined. A case study is also presented, where the bearing capacity of a clayey soil is estimated using different methods and compared with field test results. The results of this study highlight the importance of considering soil properties, such as strength, stiffness, and density, in evaluating bearing capacity. The findings also demonstrate the need for a reliable and accurate method for estimating soil bearing capacity, particularly in areas with complex geology or uncertain soil conditions. The study concludes with recommendations for future research and practice, including the development of more advanced methods for evaluating soil bearing capacity and the use of in-situ testing for more accurate soil characterization. The outcomes of this research have significant implications for geotechnical engineering practice, particularly in the design of foundations for large infrastructure projects. By providing a comprehensive review of existing methods and a critical evaluation of their limitations, this study aims to contribute to the development of more reliable and accurate methods for evaluating soil bearing capacity.
