Abstract
AbstractPathogenic microbes, including bacteria are a public health concern. Infections caused by these microbes can lead to various diseases ranging from skin infection to more severe illnesses. The aim of the research was to evaluate the efficacy of selected medicated and beauty soaps against pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. Clinical isolates were identified by standard microbiological methods. The antibacterial activities of the soaps were assayed using agar disk diffusion method. The result of this study revealed that at 100 mg/ml concentration, tetmosol was the most effective on Staphylococcus aureus (24 mm); dettol was the most effective on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (25 mm), Escherichia coli (24 mm) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (20 mm). The result of the study further revealed that the antibacterial efficacy of the soaps increased as the concentration increases. Medicated soaps such as dettol and tetmosol have shown great deal of antibacterial activities to pathogenic microorganisms.
