Abstract
ABSTRACT Some locally formulated pesticide products with trade names DAKSH, MAGIC FORCE, LARA FORCE and BEST sold in a Nigerian market was investigated for the actual active ingredients as well as the concentration of each ingredients present in the pesticides. Gas Chromatography (GC) technique was used for the analysis. Results indicated that the pesticide products contain eight (8) chemical constituents with each pesticide having a different active ingredient with their composition as follows: DAKSH has Dichlorvos at a concentration of 9.96X105mg/L, MAGIC FORCE has Dimethoate at a concentration of 3.0X105mg/L, LARA FORCE has Cyhalothrin at a concentration of 2.5x104mg/L while BEST has Cypermethrin at a concentration of 1.0x105mg/L. The identities of the active ingredients in the product were revealed by mass spectra data. Therefore, it is a matter of public health significance and environmental sustainability to frequently monitor labeled and unlabeled pesticide products sold in the Nigerian markets in order to ascertain their true chemical composition and active ingredients.
