Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigated the prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women attending the maternity ward at the General Hospital, Offa, Kwara State. Anaemia in pregnancy remains a major public health concern, contributing significantly to maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries. The research aimed to identify the prevalence, knowledge, and perception of anaemia among antenatal patients, as well as the factors responsible for its occurrence. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population consisted of pregnant women attending antenatal clinics at the General Hospital, Offa. A total of 100 respondents were selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts and percentages. The study revealed that anaemia was prevalent among pregnant women, particularly those of lower socio-economic status, those with inadequate dietary intake, and those affected by parasitic infections. The findings of the study highlight the need for early registration for antenatal care, regular health education on nutrition, and continuous iron and folate supplementation during pregnancy. The study concluded that improved maternal education, adequate nutrition, and strengthened public health programs can significantly reduce the prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy. It recommends that both governmental and non-governmental health bodies intensify health awareness and nutritional interventions among pregnant women to enhance maternal and child health outcomes.
