Abstract
Fake news has emerged as one of the major challenges confronting the credibility of modern journalism in Nigeria. With the expansion of social media platforms and the increasing speed of information dissemination, the lines between factual reporting and misinformation have become blurred. This study investigates the role of mass media in combating fake news in Nigeria, using Rivers State as a case study. It examines the responsibilities of traditional and new media outlets in identifying, correcting, and preventing the spread of false information. Findings reveal that while mass media institutions play a crucial role in verifying information and educating the public, they face obstacles such as inadequate training, lack of modern fact-checking tools, political interference, and insufficient funding. The study concludes that effective combat against fake news requires a combination of professional ethics, digital literacy, and strong regulatory mechanisms.
