Abstract
This study was aimed at evaluating the antiviral potential of ginger (extract) on poliovirus serotype 1 at the WHO National Polio Laboratory, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The study was centered on the following objectives; the cytotoxicity of the ginger extract on L20B cell line, determination of the titer of the polio virus serotype 1 after treatment with different dilutions of fresh ginger extract and also to explore an alternative method of controlling Poliovirus infections. Methodology: Fresh ginger was procured from the commercial market, about 5g was weighed and pounded. The extract was now saturated with 50mls maintenance medium, it was sieved and centrifuged to obtain the filtrate which was used to determine the cytotoxicity on the L20B cell line, Propagation of L20B Cell line which is a selective cell line for Polio virus and also in titration of the virus stock to determine the working concentration. Result:The presence of cytopathic effect is evident at all dilutions of the virus and the extract meaning that the virus grew and multiply without inhibition by the extract. Ginger extract was also seeded L20B cell line at different dilutions, it was observed that the extract had no cytopathic effect on the cell line. Conclusion:Ginger extract has no antiviral potential on poliovirus serotype 1.
