Impact of Continual Wetland Acquisition on the Residents of Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State

Abstract
The study evaluates the Impact of Continual Wetland Acquisition on the Residents of Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. Data collected with the use of questionnaire administered to 86 respondents comprising of Estate Surveyors and valuers and residential property owners in the study area. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed that flood control and livelihood are the most common benefits of wetland acquisition on the residents of Ughelli South Local government area of Delta State. The finding also revealed that Lack of awareness about wetland importance and Government policy are the most significant factors influence wetland acquisition in study area The findings revealed the impacts of wetland acquisition in the study area to include increase in pollution due to the conversion of wetland areas, followed by Reduced access to fishing and farming areas are the most common impact.. The study recommended that Enforce environmental impact assessment (EIA) before any wetland conversion to ensure long-term ecological costs are considered. That clarify land tenure and ownership laws to avoid disputes that may lead to unplanned a Conduct community sensitization campaigns on the ecological and flood-control benefits of wetlands.
