The Influence of Religion on Health Practices and Beliefs in Akwa Ibom State: a Case Study of Uyo Metropolis

Abstract
ABSTRACT This work examined the influence of religion on health practices and beliefs in Akwa lbom State using Uyo as case study. In order to solve the problem of the study, four objectives, research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide it. This study is conducted from the perspective of Functionalism as proposed by the anthropologist, Bronislaw Malinowski. This work uses the descriptive survey method of research. The research area for this study is Uyo Local Government Area. The population of the study comprised all residents of Uyo metropolis. The Taro Yamane formula is employed in determining the sample size. The sample size for this study thus, is 400 randomly selected residents of Uyo metropolis. This study uses both primary and secondary sources of data collection. The primary data was obtained through the use of questionnaires. A questionnaire is a research in trument comprising of carefully designed questions, used to elicit information from the respondents. A close ended questionnaire will be issued out to respondents to fill and return. Data collected was analyzed through the use of tables and simple percentages. Empirical hypotheses were however tested using the chi-square statistical tool at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Findings from the study revealed that there is a significant influence of religion on health practices and beliefs; as well as there is a significant influence of religious leaders on health practices and belief. The work recommended amongst others that non governmental organizations should engage religious leaders in health promotion efforts to enhance community acceptance and reach.
