Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the impact of bullying on the mental health of undergraduate students in Ekiti State, focusing on Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), Afe Babalola University, and Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). Utilizing a descriptive survey design, the research explores various forms of bullying—physical, verbal, social, and cyberbullying—and their effects on students’ psychological well-being. Data were collected from 150 respondents using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings reveal that bullying significantly impacts students’ mental health, with social and cyberbullying being the most prevalent and harmful forms. Peer pressure, feelings of superiority, inadequate disciplinary measures, and family issues are identified as key causes of bullying. The study highlights adverse effects, including anxiety, depression, and diminished self-esteem, resulting from physical, verbal, social, and cyberbullying. Proposed solutions include implementing anti-bullying programs, peer support initiatives, anonymous reporting systems, and strict disciplinary policies. This research underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address bullying in Nigerian universities to promote students’ mental health and academic success.
