Abstract
The study examined the effect of eating patterns on the anthropometric status of preschool children aged 2–5 years in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 150 preschoolers selected from five schools out of a total population of 562. The Anthropometric Status and Eating Pattern Questionnaire (ASEPQ) was used, with a reliability coefficient of 0.739. Results showed that 59.3% of the children were underweight, indicating inadequate food intake. Commonly consumed foods included rice, beans, custard, orange, spinach, and biscuits. Statistical analysis revealed no significant relationship between eating patterns and anthropometric status, but a significant prevalence of undernutrition and a strong influence of socioeconomic factors on children’s nutrition. The study emphasized the need for nutrition education, dietary diversity, and better access to nutritious foods to address malnutrition and support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger) and 3 (Good Health and Well-being).
