Six Sigma and Performance of Deposit Money Banks in Southeast Nigeria.

Abstract
The study sought to examine the effect of six sigma on the performance of deposit money banks in South East Nigeria. The specific objectives included to determine the effect of process definition and measurement on the organisational efficiency of First Bank Nigeria PLC branches in Enugu Metropolis, determine the effect of process improvement on the employee productivity of First Bank Nigeria PLC branches in Enugu Metropolis and determine the effect of process analysis and control on the organisational profitability of First Bank PLC branches in Enugu Metropolis. The study adopted a survey research design and the data used in the study was sourced using a self-structured five point Likert scale questionnaire. The population of the study included 73 staff of different branches of First Bank in Enugu and the sample size was 62. The data was analysed based on simple percentages, and the hypothesis formulated is further tested using the Chi-square goodness of fit test. The result of the analysis showed that process definition and measurement has a significant effect on the organisational efficiency of deposit money bank branches in Enugu Metropolis (X2c = 10.7 and X2t = 9.49), process improvement has a significant effect on the organisational profitability of deposit money bank branches in Enugu Metropolis (X2c = 17.8 and X2t = 9.49) and process analysis and control have a significant effect on the employee productivity of deposit money bank branches in Enugu Metropolis (X2c = 19.1 and X2t = 9.49). it was therefore concluded that six sigma has a significant effect on the organisational performance of deposit money banks in the south east. Based on these findings, the following recommendations were made: Banks in the south east should adopt Six Sigma for improved design and enhancement of product acceptability among customers and proper time should be allocated to process planning and measurement as it sets the foundation for new processes and activities that the bank would be carrying out on a daily basis.
