Abstract
The relationship between blood sugar levels and intraocular pressure (IOP) has been a topic of interest in the field of ophthalmology, particularly in individuals with diabetes. However, limited research exists regarding the potential impact of blood sugar level variations on IOP in normotensive adults. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of blood sugar level fluctuations on IOP in a normotensive adult population. The study comprised a cross-sectional design involving a diverse cohort of normotensive adults, ranging in age and demographic characteristics. Participants' blood sugar levels were measured using standard methods, and their IOP was non-invasively assessed through tonometry. Data collection spanned through a defined period to capture variations in blood sugar levels and corresponding changes in IOP. To analyze the data, statistical techniques such as correlation analysis and multiple regression models were employed to explore the association between blood sugar levels and IOP and the effect of age and gender on the changes. Postprandial IOP was significantly higher than baseline IOP (16.55 ± 0.55 versus 14.86 ± 0.500 mmHg; p < 0.001) for the right eye and (16.62 ± 0.58 versus 15.06 ± 0.51 mmHg; p < 0.001) for the left eye. Correlative analysis showed no statistically significant association between age, gender and changes in IOP as a result of changes in blood sugar level (p>0.001). Ultimately, this thesis contributed valuable knowledge to the scientific community, enhancing understanding of the interplay between blood sugar regulation and ocular health, and potentially influencing clinical practices by promoting preventive measures to mitigate the risk of ocular diseases associated with elevated IOP.
