Analysis of Food Security Among Smallholder Farmers in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State

Abstract
The study analyzed the food security among smallholder farmers in Jema'a Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The objectives of the study is to assess the state of food security among smallholder farmers in Jema’a Local Government Area with a view to determine the problems and proffer solutions, to describe the socio-economic characteristics of farming households in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The study used a structured questionnaire as an instrument for data collection. A multistage sampling techniques was used to select 112 household's heads. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Foster, Greer, Thorbecke (FGT) and logit regression models. The result revealed that majority 62.5% of the farming households were male with a mean age of 37 years. The logistic regression model explains 76.80% of the total variation in the food security status of households. Household size, education level, income level and marital status were significant at the 1% significance level while age and gender of household heads were significant at 5% and 10% respectively. Majority of households, 63.3% engaged in off-farm activities and 45.0% reduced food consumption as a coping strategy. It is recommended that Government should look into the price of seeds, other agro chemicals, inflations, access to market. Adoption of new technologies to enhanced sustainable farming.
