Abstract
This study evaluates the phytochemical composition and platelet count in wister rat fed with telfairia occidentalis root extract .The roots of T. occidentalisT. occidentalis were harvested from its natural habitat, dried under shade in the laboratory, and pulverized after 28 days. The powdered sample was extracted with ethanol solvent using soxhlet extractor and concentrated by rotary evaporator to a syrupy mass. A portion of the crude extract was screened for phytochemical constituents using standard methods, while the other portions were subjected to sub acute test in order to assess the platelet count in Wistar rats fed with low dose (1 mg/kg), moderate dose (2 mg/kg), and high dose (3 mg/kg) of the ethanol root extract. Among the phytochemicals present were glycosides, alkaloids, and saponins. There was a dose-dependent decrease of platelet count with the 1 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg groups, while the high dose gave a slightly high dose of 600 x 10^3/µL. The findings indicated that platelets were reduced or suppressed by low dose concentrations of T. occidentalisT. occidentalis, and this suggests some level of toxicity from the plant extracts.
